Services in UCC
There are many Services in UCC that are there for the Students in UCC. With many outlets for students to eat and others to help with study.
Student Centre
Áras na Mac Léinn, The Student Centre at University College Cork is at the heart of the campus. Áras na Mac Léinn provides numerous facilities to the staff, students and visitors to UCC.
- The Information Desk, located on the ground floor is your first port of call for information about the student centre, UCC campus and general queries.
- Devere Hall, or the Multifunctional Hall as it is also known, can be hired for specific functions or accessed regularly by students as an informal common room.
- The Amphitheatre located just outside Áras na Mac Léinn may also be hired.
- Meeting Rooms, Computer Labs and the Pool Room can all be found on the upper levels while UCC’s Radio Station, UCC 98.3FM, is also located on the second floor of the building. Located on the ground floor, is a First Aid room and the Promotional Stand available for hire.
- Áras na Mac Léinn also manages Creche Cois Laoi (NCNA accredited Centre of Excellence, located across campus in the Brookfield Health Sciences Complex).
- There are a number of retail and dining facilities available in the Student Centre.
- Visit An Stad for stationery, newspapers and other UCC branded goods such as hoodies, tshirts and other gift items.
- An Siopa is the place to go for quick snacks such as ice cream, crisps or packed sandwiches.
- It also has two Cafés – Cafés Oasis and Upstairs; Cafés Oasis serves hot and cold food and upstairs serves gourmet sandwiches, wraps, baguettes and panini with a wide range of fillings.
- Club Áras, or the New Bar as it is sometimes known, serves a full carvery during the week as well as hot breakfasts and evening suppers.
- John Smiths & Sons is the on campus book shop while banking services are provided by Bank of Ireland.
Creche
UCC’s creche called ‘Creche Cois Laoi’ has a capacity for eighty children. Two-thirds of their places are allocated to students, with the remaining third to full-time staff. Grant holders may apply for a subsidy towards crèche costs. There is a waiting list for the crèche which is managed on a first come first served basis.

Financial support is available from the Students’ Union for full-time student parents whose children attend a creche.

Student Health
The Student Health Department seeks to provide services that target illnesses and problems that occur in the University Student population. It does not seek to, and is not resourced to provide a full GP service but has a range of services that may not be as easily accessible in the community. They do provide the following services
- Primary care of acute and chronic illnesses that present in the community
- Contraception service including insertion of Long Acting implants
- Women’s Health, Cervical smear services.
- Screening and immunisation against infectious diseases.
- Consultant Psychiatrist Service.
- Sexual Transmitted Infection diagnosis and treatment service
- Travel Advice and Vaccinations.
- Health Promotion Programmes.
- Hospital referral service.
- Ante Natal Care.
- Accident and Emergency.
- Physiotherapy Service.
If any student is worried about a health problem, they can arrange an appointment with the Student health Department Service on 021-4902311 or call to the department where the receptionist will arrange a clinic appointment for you. Note: It is not possible to book an appointment via e-mail or on-line. If a student is acutely ill on the day, their problem may initially be assessed by a nurse and if necessary seen by the doctor as soon as possible.
All consultations are completely confidential, and will only be revealed to others with your consent. All medical notes are also confidential and remain in the Student Health Department. They do not form part of any student’s academic file.
UCC Visitor Centre
University College Cork’s Visitors’ Centre acts as a central point of information for the many visitors to the University.
The centre is located along the Stone Corridor in the North Wing, at the cultural and historical heart of campus.
UCC is already a popular tourist destination and new audio tours taking in the history and culture of the University are available from the Visitors’ Centre for purchase – call into centre for more details.
