UCC Students Walk Out!

On Thursday, October 13th, thousands of UCC Students joined the National Student Walkout, organised by the Union of Students’ in Ireland to protest the rising cost of living, the cost of college and the accommodation crisis.

Walkout demands;

Accommodation:

  • Protect Renters
    • A ban on evictions
    • Legislation to protect digs renters
    • Rights for tenancies < 6 months
    • Housing as a right in the constitution
  • Cut the Rents
    • Reduce and freeze rents at the 2017 level
  • State Investment in Public-Owned PBSA
    • 40% state subsidisation of public PBSA and no more private PBSA

Cost of College:

  • Abolish the Student Contribution Charge
  • Fund the Higher Education Sector
    • Reform of SUSI
    • Implement the €137 million shortfall in core funding identified in Funding the Future
  • Raise the Minimum Wage to match a Living Wage
    •  Inclusive of PhD Stipends
